"Cakes" Tab

My prior post showcased Ruby's latest birthday cake. Since people often ask about the cakes I've made, I thought I'd put them all in one spot for easy access.

Please visit the new "Cakes" tab up above if you need some cake decorating ideas or simply to check out what I've made in the past.

And here's one other tip while I've got your attention - I know I can be sporadic at posting sometimes, so if you don't want to keep checking back every day to see if there's something new, feel free to submit your email address in the "Follow By Email" section on the right-hand side of the blog. Then you'll simply receive a notification by email each time a new post goes up.

Or just keep coming back and checking every day, the old fashioned way - whatever floats your boat. I'm just happy that there are a few people out there still interested in this old thing!

Cinderella Cake

I really challenged myself this year
with Miss Ruby's 4th birthday cake.
She picked out a blue raspberry cake mix,
that I baked into 9 inch round cake pans.
Then I whipped up some frosting and was ready to go.
I started with one cake -
added a second,
and stacked on a third -
and finally, a fourth before calling it good!
I'd never stacked cake so high!

I inserted three plastic drinking straws down through each layer
to help keep things stabilized.
The tops were trimmed off and the straws were pushed down,
so that they were flush with the top of the cake.
Next, I worked on carving out a hole in the middle of the cakes.
I didn't want it to get too wide,
so I just delicately scooped out cake with a small spoon until
my Cinderella barbie fit snugly in the hole.
The most challenging part
was carving down the top cake to shape her dress.
I enlisted some help from Adam and we shaved off a bit
of the second layer too to make a smoother transition.

This was the final shape of the cake prior to decorating.
Then I slathered on a layer of blue frosting all the way around -
before adding all the fancy details to make the skirt below.
Once I got the majority of the skirt work done,
I added Cinderella.
She needed to be stationed inside the cake,
so I could add a little frosting detail to cover up her hips.
It was easier to get at things by twisting her arms up while I worked.
This is how she looked from the back when I was finished.
I covered up her hips with some ruffles -
and added some cute little details to her skirt.
I had no idea how I was going to pull this off when I started,
but I think she turned out pretty cute!
And my own little princess LOVED her,
so that was all that really mattered.
