I came across some Easter treats on Pinterest
that had to be made for Ruby's birthday party.
Her invitations already had a chick and bunny theme going on,
so why not make pretzel treats to match?
The only ingredients necessary were some pretzels,
almond bark, yellow candy melts,
and food writers (but you'll see they didn't work so well).

To keep things clean and easy,
I grabbed a ziplock bag -
and put the melted almond bark inside and cut off one corner
to squeeze bark out into the pretzels to make the bunnies.

Then, my niece Lexi and I laid the pretzels out on wax paper
and got to work!

We slowly but surely filled in the pretzels -

and allowed them to harden so we could make faces.

We were so excited to use the food markers
and draw adorable faces with whiskers and pink ears,
but were heartbroken to discover
that the markers would not write on the almond bark!
No matter how we tried,
the markers just did not like the texture of the almond bark
and we couldn't get faces on our bunnies.

So when faced with a bunch of faceless bunnies -

I improvised.
I had these sparkle gels in my cake decorating kit and figured
any face was better than no face at all!

So we just kept them really simple
with a light red stripe for the ears and
little dots of blue for the eyes and nose.
They weren't perfect, but you could tell they were bunnies.
So we forged ahead to the chicks.
Here's Lex, filling the pretzels with the yellow candy melt.
We had planned on using the markers on the chicks as well,
but grabbed some sprinkles I had on hand
and dropped a blue one in before the candy hardened
to give each chick an eye.
Then I used a little of the sparkle gel on the tip of the pretzel
to make a beak.

Some we left plain -

and others we covered in orange sprinkles.

Both versions were adorable -

and a big hit at Ruby's birthday party.
Even though things didn't go quite as planned, they still turned out to be
the cutest pretzel treats I have ever made!
